Joel Koenig, CAP®, AEP®

The Koenig Group, LLC is a regional consulting organization and an (RIA) Registered Investment Advisor that offers creative planning strategies and consulting to affluent clients of Law Firms, CPA Firms, Private Banks, and Investment Counselors (RIA’s).  The Koenig Group continues to add value in the Income Tax Planning and Wealth Consulting process with particular expertise in the sophisticated use of Qualified and Non-qualified Plans, ROTH IRA Conversions, Charitable Tax Planning, rendering second opinions a consultants on the advanced uses of Life Insurance.  The Koenig Group helps clients to realize considerable income, estate, gift and GST tax savings, and to create meaningful charitable legacies for very high income and ultra-high new worth entrepreneurs and the owners of hedge funds, private equity firms and family offices.

Joel’s principal area of business expertise includes:  Pension and Non-qualified Plan consulting for high income and high net worth clients in their 60’s, 70’s, and 80’s.  He began his career working for a leading consulting actuarial firm in NYC.  Thereafter, he spent the next 8 years developing a successful qualified plan and pension-consulting firm in Washington, D.C.  Over the next 12 years, he and Ray Schoenke built the Mid-Atlantic area’s most successful non-qualified plan and executive benefit consulting firms:  Schoenke & Koenig, The Washington, D.C. Office of MCG, The Management Compensation Group, Inc., Also an original partner of M Financial Corporation. He was also a Director and shareholder of National Philanthropic Affiliates, Inc. The developer of Philanthrotec and a national organization specializing in charitable tax planning and later, The Todd Organization.

Over the past forty years, Joel has lectured on various topics throughout the country at CPA chapters, bar associations, Universities, tax conferences, and six Estate Planning Councils.  He has written extensively on qualified plans, split dollar, executive benefits, and charitable tax planning. For the past 10 years, Joel has served as a contributing editor of “Trust and Estates” Magazine and also wrote a section on the Advanced Pension Planning course of the Master in Financial Services program, for the American College.  Joel also was a contributing author to the AALU’s Split Dollar Handbook. He has been the main platform speaker at the NYU Tax Institute, the International Forum (The Forum 400, seven times including 2011), The IAFP (International Association of Financial Planners), The Arizona Institute and The AALU (the Association for Advanced Life Underwriting, three times).

Joel has been a member of the Society of Financial Service Professionals (formerly The American Society of CLU & ChFC) since 1974, The Association for advanced Life Underwriting (AALU) since 1967, The American Society of Pension Actuaries (ASPA, associate member), The International Association of Financial Planners (IAFP), The Small Business Council, the MDRT’s Top of the Table (charter member), The International Association of Advisors in Philanthropy (AIP), and the Washington, DC Estate Planning Council.  Several years ago, he completed his directorship of the Advisory Board of The International Forum.  Currently, he serves on the AALU Charitable Planning & Business and Estate Planning Subcommittees.

Recently, he and another Koenig Group member, Jeanne Gildee, Chartered Financial Consultant and Joel have been designated as a Chartered Advisors in Philanthropy (CAP®).  Over the years, Joel has also served on charitable boards and sub-committees.  He is also a member of the university of Michigan’s president’s Club.
